The fuss about OpenAI’s new app store has taken the world, causing people to talk about it. Everyone has a different opinion about its existence; some are welcoming the new platform while some think that it’s just ridiculous. Despite the controversy, a new platform has been created. Is it just like the way the company has planned it?
OpenAI’s New App Store: The Concept
The main core idea is basically similar to Apple and their Apps Store’s launch back in 2008. If you are familiar with the system, you’d know what it’s all about. At that time, the company allowed developers to create and make new apps within their ecosystem. Do they get paid when doing so? Theoretically, they do.
For OpenAI, it’s believed that they can make important transition. They originally offered ChatGPT for their core product. Now, they can be a platform service where others can build apps within their environment and ecosystem. Will they be as popular (and also as successful) as Apple App Store? Only time will tell.
The Big Deal of the Platform
Sam Altman, OpenAI CEO, urged and invited software makers and developers to build on their ecosystem because OpenAI has its own marketplace. It’s the place where non-techies and developers can create customized functions and even monetize it through global sharing.
OpenAI is offering a concept like YouTube and Apple App Store combined. Not only developers are able to build on the system, but the system itself has become a platform – even offering fresh contents to attract new users.
About the System
The app store is now available and open, known as the GPT Store. Only paid users or those with ChatGPT Plus subscription) can access this feature. This subscription costs around $20 a month. Those with ChatGPT Business Plan Team and Enterprise subscription can also access this features.
In case you are interested, you need to spend from at least $25 a month to thousands for a user, depending on the features you choose. Unfortunately, free users won’t be able to access this store. It’s unclear whether it would be available for free users later, but it’s a slim chance.
Everyone should be familiar with OpenAI’s interface by now, but thanks to this marketplace, developers are able to add new experiences and compelling features. Not to mention that there is also a handy search function, like in already-established (mobile) app stores.
Important Considerations
The idea
to monetize the applications is interesting, but up until now, there hasn’t
been any clear indication or detailed explanation about how developers are
being paid. Rumor has it that they may get a share of company’s revenue and not
the regular cut from sales, but it’s still unclear. We should know more about
OpenAI’s new app store and its development once more info has been revealed.
